Douglas R. Hext of Rubicon passed away unexpectedly at age 61. During his brief time on this earth, Doug lived life to the fullest, loving his family, and avidly pursuing his favorite interests.

Recently, he was an avid team roper, competing and practicing with his beloved mare Misty. Beyond competitions, Doug loved to ride with his wife and their mare Sonoma.  He was teaching his grandkids to ride and loved spending time with them at his barn. He spent many happy days enjoying his time with his horses and family.

Doug was a passionate and accomplished volleyball coach.  As a high school coach at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School, he led his team to 3 state titles, and two runner-ups.  As a club coach, he coached many teams to be among the top in the nation.  He was passionate about developing athletes to be mentally tough and play to the best of their abilities.  He helped his daughter to be a better coach and was known as “Coach Papa.”

Doug loved racing and snowmobiles.  He loved to watch NASCAR and go to dirt races, spent years pitting for his friends at snowmobile races, riding snowmobile trails with friends, and racing snow ovals at the top level.  He will be missed by his fellow riders and friends.

Most of all, Doug loved his family. He loved his grandkids and would drop everything to watch them and help develop their talents. He was always there to talk to his daughters and son-in-law. He loved his wife, Sharon, of 38 years and would do anything for her. Doug is survived by his wife, Sharon, his daughter, Shannon (Ted) Schmidt, three beloved grandchildren: Erin, Kari & Reid. He is further survived by his parents, Doug and Carol, brothers, sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Megan.

He was an experienced electrician for more than 30 years. Doug also worked at a pheasant farm and enjoyed working with the birds.

Doug will always be remembered as someone who gave 200% in all he did, as a grandpa, dad, friend, roper and coach.

Family will receive family and friends Friday, January 6, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1001 Center Street, Hartford. Memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church. Rev. Jeremy Husby will officiate.  Interment Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m.
