Pearl V. Horst of Hartford passed away Friday, November 11, 2016 at The Gardens of Hartford at the age of 88 years.  She was born August 16, 1928 in Hartford, the daughter of Norman and Alice (nee Walrabenstein) Lepien.  Pearl spent her childhood in the Towns of Erin and Hartford on family farms where her father was a worker.  During the Depression, she lived in DeForest and London, WI where she made life-long friends.  Her father moved the family back to Hartford, and they bought a farm.  She married Alfred Horst on June 7, 1947 at Erin Emanuel Evangelical Church.  They were dairy farmers until they retired in 1980.  Pearl was a farmer’s wife, helping on the farm, but also a dedicated and loving mother; yet she worked at various part-time jobs in the Hartford area.  In the two decades before she retired, Pearl worked at the Iron Ridge Inn and Country Retreat in Hartford as a waitress and cook.  Pearl was a member of the Hartford Senior Friends.

Pearl is survived by her loving children, Terry (Marilyn) Horst of North Lake, and Lisa (David) Gunst of Hartford, her adored grandchildren Andrea, Eric, Alissa (Casey) Gales, Sara (Russell) Haeuser, Laura (fiancée Justin Tank), and her precious great-grandchildren, Jayden, Emma, Cadence, Grace and Quinten.  Also surviving are nieces, nephews, a sister-in-law Gloria Luedtke, a brother-in-law Willard Kaun, other relatives and friends.  The family would like to recognize Pearl’s special war-time pen pal and long-time friend, Nellie Steen.  Pearl is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, her son, Gregory.

Visitation is Tuesday, November 15th from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1001 Center Street, Hartford.  Funeral service will follow at 5:30 p.m. at Church.  Rev. Paul Waldschmidt will officiate.  Interment is Wednesday, November 16th at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford.

Pearl’s family would like to express a sincere and heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the staff at The Gardens of Hartford for their care, compassion, and loving support.  The family would also like to extend a ‘thank you’ to Seasons Hospice that helped in the last days of Pearl’s life.
