Life Legacy

Horicon native Orville T Plageman passed away on July 6th, 2010. Orville was born on May 28th, 1922 and suffered from Polio at a young age. He attended Horicon High School graduating in 1941. Orville married Ruth Esther Schulz on October 6th, 1945 and a son was born to them in June of 1964, Todd Orville Plageman. Orville worked various jobs until finding his one niche in life, an Independent Insurance Agent for Plageman-Semler Insurance Agency in Hartford, Wisconsin. Orville and Ruth vacationed often in Florida and after their son Todd joined the US Air Force, they decided to split their years between Wisconsin and Florida. They spent the cold winters enjoying the sun in Florida where they could golf daily, and their hot summers gardening, golfing and relaxing in Wisconsin.

In 1984 their son Todd married Sheila L Lehman of Junction City, Wisconsin and they were blessed with three grandchildren, Adam T (Jenny) Plageman, April L (Cory) McDowell, and Kelly M Plageman. While Todd was stationed in Nebraska, Orville and Ruth decided to relocate to Nebraska to live with their son and his family in 2002. Then in 2007 when Todd retired from the military, the entire family relocated back to Wisconsin in the Stevens Point area. Orville and Ruth have since been blessed with two Great Grandchildren: Julia Rayne McDowell (2008) and Carter Hale McDowell (2009) who reside with their parents April and Cory in Nebraska.

In the Spring of 2009, Orville and Ruth moved into an assisted living apartment home. Orville suffered a stroke on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 with an intracranial hemorrhage. He was surrounded by his wife, son, daughter in law, and grandchildren as he lived his final days in assisted living.

Orville was an avid golfer and skilled to have accomplished two holes in one. Many might have thought him handicapped due to his constant need of wearing a leg brace to walk, but he was a very determined man who enjoyed a challenge. Orville always accomplished any task he undertook and met any challenge thrown at him.

Orville was a well known and respected member of the community and even served on the Hartford Union High School Board. He became a Shriner, a Lion, and a Mason. He enjoyed trap shooting, duck and deer hunting, fishing, and bowling. He was a kind hearted man who led his family by being an example in their lives. He dies a man of wealth for the many lives that he has touched. Orville was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Plageman, Sr and Hattie (nee Schwantes) Plageman and his siblings Sylvia Mueller, Madeline Von Wald, Louis Plageman, Jr, Donald Plageman, and Delores Marlock.

Visitation will be held at Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, 226 South Main Street, Hartford on Friday, July 9 from 6-8 pm and on Saturday, July 10 from 8:30-10 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 317 East Walnut Street, Horicon.
